Have you ever wondered what Jesus really thinks about your church? About your faith? In the book of Revelation, Jesus gave direct messages to seven churches, and one of them received a shocking wake-up call that still resonates today.
What Does It Mean to Have a Good Reputation?
Reputation matters in every aspect of life. It's how we decide where to eat, who to trust, and what to buy. Every business begs for five-star reviews because reputation drives decisions. But here's the truth: our reputation is only as good as our repetition.
The church in Sardis had an excellent reputation. From the outside, they looked alive, vibrant, and successful. But Jesus saw something different.
Jesus' Message to the Church in Sardis
In Revelation 3:1-6, Jesus delivers one of His most direct messages: "I know your deeds. You have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead."
This wasn't just criticism—it was a diagnosis. The church appeared to be thriving, but spiritually, they were lifeless. They had managed their image well enough to fool people, but they couldn't fool God.
The Danger of Living for Others' Approval
When we become obsessed with what others think of us, we risk losing sight of what God thinks. Living for the approval of others can actually deafen us to the voice of God. We start defining our self-worth based on whether people like us, and we mistake human approval for divine approval.
Paul understood this tension when he wrote to the Galatians: "Obviously, I'm not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ's servant."
How Do We Wake Up From Spiritual Sleep?
Jesus doesn't just diagnose the problem—He provides the solution. His message is clear: "Wake up!"
But how do we stop sleepwalking through our faith?
Five Steps to Spiritual Awakening
Jesus outlines specific actions in verse 3: "Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard. Hold it fast and repent."
What Does a Spiritually Alive Church Look Like?
A truly alive church doesn't just survive—it thrives in its mission. It's not enough to have good worship services and maintain a positive reputation in the community. An alive church actively reaches out, shares Jesus, loves people who are different, and makes disciples.
The Call to Action
Jesus says to strengthen what remains and complete the work. There's still hope, but it requires action. The church must move beyond just gathering together to actually penetrating darkness and transforming lives.
Questions for Personal Reflection
Consider these challenging questions:
The Promise for Those Who Respond
Jesus offers incredible hope: "Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me dressed in white, for they are worthy."
Those who respond to the wake-up call receive the greatest reward. The promise is greater than the work required. There's still time, there's still hope, and the best is yet to come.
Life Application
This week, choose one of the six reflection questions above and take concrete action. If you've been coasting on your reputation or living for others' approval, it's time to wake up. Stop sleepwalking through your faith and start actively pursuing God's mission for your life.
Ask yourself: Am I more concerned with what people think of me than what God thinks of me? Have I been resting on past spiritual experiences instead of actively growing in my relationship with Jesus? What would it look like for me to truly "wake up" this week?
Remember, Jesus doesn't just say "wake up"—He also says "now go." The harvest is great, the workers are few, and there's work to be done. Don't let another day pass living on reputation alone when God is calling you to authentic, vibrant spiritual life.
